Extreme shortage of cotton in cotton fields

November 03, 2023

Cotton is a crop that is sensitive to potassium deficiency. Particularly since the development of BT transgenic insect-resistant cotton, potassium-deficient cotton fields often exhibit severe disease, premature aging, small bells, poor boll opening, and poor fiber quality. In recent years, the quick-acting nutrient rapid test results of cotton soil have shown that most of the soil available potassium content is less than 80 mg/kg, which is a serious shortage of potassium.

Due to the promotion and practice of potash fertilizer application, cotton farmers applying potassium fertilizer and cotton fertilizer with high potassium increased year by year, all played a role in controlling disease and increasing yield, and the content of available potassium in soil also had a recoverable increase, but there were also cotton farmers. There are misunderstandings, suggesting that the use of potassium in multiplex fertilizers (with a ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium of 1:1:1) can be used instead of potash fertilizer, or use high-concentration compound fertilizers containing 19% nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium respectively. Instead of using more potash fertilizer, some cotton farmers mistakenly believe that "potassium sulfate compound fertilizer" is potassium fertilizer, and the result is that the money is not spent but does not play a role in potassium supplementation.

The northern part of the country has seen more rain and cold temperatures in recent days. Some farmers believe that some cotton plants have yellowed leaves after they first become yellow, and they even begin to die. Some think that they are outbreaks of Verticillium wilt. The most important basis for judging whether it is withering is wilt disease. As long as the xylem of the cotton stalk does not turn brown, it can eliminate the brown wilt disease. The cotton field is likely to be caused by extreme potassium deficiency. (K deficiency can also induce disease and aggravate the disease. ), low-lying areas, plots where water accumulated, and cotton trees with heavy peaches showed severe performance. Even the worst cotton plants in the whole field were prematurely dying and dying. I have seen such cotton fields every year; the cotton fields with potash fertilizer are not in the late stage. Will cause a lot of dead trees.

Why is there a lot of dead corn in corn fields? Because corn is a crop that requires more potassium and strong potassium absorption capacity, if there is not much potassium in the corn field and the corn yield is high, the available potassium in the soil is almost consumed by the corn, and if potassium fertilizer is not added after the cotton is changed, the same applies. There will be a lot of dead trees. This kind of lesson is quite a lot.

The beginning of potassium deficiency in cotton plants started from the lower leaves in early August. After heavy rains and more bolls were formed, even three sprays of potash would not cause massive dead trees in the later period. As of mid-August, if some of the cotton plants showed a lack of potassium, but there are still green leaves on the upper part, and then they will pay close attention to reducing potassium, which will also reduce losses. If the upper leaves of the cotton plants have already withered, most of the cotton plants have withered and it will be too late to add potassium.
